ICC World Cup Final, India vs Sri Lanka - India power to World Cup triumph

India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in a pulsating final to deliver World Cup glory to their cricket-mad population for the first time since 1983. Sri Lanka smashed 91 from their last 10 overs to post 274-6 in Mumbai, with Mahela Jayawardene making a superb 103. India lost Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar early on but Gautam Gambhir and Mahendra Dhoni rebuilt the innings. Gambhir was out for 97, but captain Dhoni's brilliant unbeaten 91 led India to a famous win with 10 balls to spare.

India booked a place against Sri Lanka in Saturday's World Cup final after beating Pakistan by 29 runs in Mohali. Virender Sehwag (38) took 21 off Gul from the third over of the innings and Sachin Tendulkar, reprieved by referral and dropped four times on 27, 45, 70 and 81, looked set for his 100th international century with one of his least convincing innings. He was out for 85 from 115 balls as India compiled 260-9, with the help of Suresh Raina after the middle-order failures. Pakistan left-arm seamer Wahab Riaz took a career-best 5-46. Mohammad Hafeez struck 43 and Misbah-ul-Haq made a defiant 56 but Pakistan were all out for 231 in the final over. Munaf Patel picked up two wickets and Yuvraj Singh made up for his first ball duck with a pair of wickets, but the most important breakthrough came when Harbhajan Singh bowled Umar Akmal for 29. Sri Lanka overcame a serious bout of the jitters to book their place in Saturday's World Cup final in Mumbai, after holding their nerve to beat a spirited New Zealand by five wickets. The Black Caps looked set for a competitive score in Colombo, but they collapsed from 192-4 to 217 all out. Tillakaratne Dilshan (73) and Kumar Sangakkara (54) sent Sri Lanka charging towards victory before a flurry of wickets brought the match to life. Mahela Jayawardene, Sangakkara and Chamara Silva departed in quick succession as Lanka lost four wickets for 25 runs, but Thilan Samaraweera and Angelo Mathews kept their cool to see the hosts home with 13 balls to spare.Reported earlier: Sri Lanka - the 1996 World Cup champions - will meet New Zealand in Tuesday’s semi-final in Colombo.
